Here is a snapshot of the conditions here in Churchill this morning...
Environment Canada weather forecasters were calling for a blizzard but we didn't actually reach blizzard proportions overnight. According to Environment Canada a blizzard must have winds of 40 km/h or more, have snow or blowing snow, visibility less than 1 km and a windchill of less than -25 degrees celsius. All of these conditions must last for 4 hours or more.
The most recent forecast for the upcoming 3 months (January - March 2011) posted on the Environment Canada website shows warmer than normal temperatures are in store. This differs significantly from the 2-4 month perspective in December 2010 that indicated the winter (January - March 2011) might be cooler than normal. I'll let you know in a few months if one of the predictions was right!
Here's a few pictures out the front door (you can just make out the rocket launcher behind the flags!).
The new building is awaiting return of the construction workers after their holiday break. Here is a photo of the front of the building taken this morning.
And lastly, of course, is the daily update from NSDIC on the arctic sea ice extent. This sea ice formation season has the lowest coverage of ice on record. There are still a large portion of eastern Hudson Bay that remains ice free.
